Honing removes metal to cut a new edge, and stropping just realigns the edge you already have. What we see readers get wrong most often is reaching for a stone the first time a shave feels rough, when thirty seconds of extra stropping would have fixed it. Straight razor honing itself is a stone job needed at most twice a year, while stropping is the daily habit that keeps a razor shaving in between.
How to Tell Honing from Stropping
Stropping fixes the edge you already have. Honing builds a new one. Every shave bends the last few microns of the edge sideways under load. The bent foil makes a razor feel like it drags, even though no steel has actually been lost. Drawing the blade across leather pushes the foil back straight, and it takes thirty to sixty seconds before each shave.
Honing is different work entirely. It grinds fresh metal away on a stone to build an edge from scratch, and a razor only needs that every so often. Three signs point to honing rather than more stropping:
- Stropping stops working. The razor still pulls or drags right after a full stropping session, before any real days of use have passed.
- The thumbnail test fails unevenly. The edge grabs your thumbnail cleanly in the middle but skates smooth near the heel or toe, meaning part of the bevel has gone rounded or chipped.
- You can see or feel damage. A visible nick, a rolled section you can feel with a fingernail run along the edge, or a spot that looks matte instead of polished. Any of those means the bevel needs rebuilding.
None of those show up after a normal shave. If the razor felt fine yesterday and rough today, strop it properly before you assume it needs a stone.
The Grit Progression, Step by Step
A full honing runs through three or four stones in order, coarse to fine, and skipping a step in the middle leaves visible scratches the next stone cannot fully remove.

The 1,000-grit stone does the real work. It sets or corrects the bevel itself, and it is the stone most likely to ruin a razor in inexperienced hands. Every stroke on it removes real steel, with almost no margin for error. The finishing stones above it mostly polish what the 1,000 already shaped correctly.
How to Hone a Straight Razor Freehand
Honing a razor by hand means laying the blade flat on the stone, spine and edge both touching. You draw it forward on a diagonal, so the whole edge meets the stone evenly along its length. The spine is the guide: it sets the bevel angle for you. Your only job is keeping the blade flat and moving in a straight line. The spine already handles the angle.
A few points decide whether that stroke works:
- Let the blade’s own weight do the cutting. Pressing down does not sharpen faster. It flexes a hollow-ground blade and rounds the very bevel you are trying to keep flat.
- Reverse direction at the end of each stroke, edge trailing. Flip the razor over its spine, never lift and turn it in the air, so the edge is never leading into a surface that could nick it.
- Count laps instead of timing yourself. Fifteen to thirty passes per side on the 1,000 stone is a normal starting point, then fewer on each finer stone as you are refining rather than rebuilding.
- Check progress between stones, before moving to the next. The thumbnail test and the hanging-hair test, covered in choosing a straight razor, tell you whether a stone has finished its job before you move on.
- Wipe the blade and the stone between grits. Grit particles from a coarser stone carried onto a finer one scratch the edge you just spent ten minutes polishing.
The single biggest reason a first honing attempt goes wrong is an uneven stroke, usually pressing harder on the heel or the toe without noticing. That leaves one end sharp and the other still dull. On your face, that shows up as a blade that cuts cleanly on the cheek and tugs at the jaw. There is no shortcut around this beyond practice on a cheap blade before you touch a razor you actually want to keep.
Testing the Edge Before You Shave with It
A razor that looks sharp and a razor that is sharp look identical at arm’s length, so testing the edge directly is the only reliable check. Run the thumbnail test along the whole length of the edge, spot by spot. Rest the blade on your thumbnail at a shallow angle, apply no downward pressure, and draw it a few millimetres sideways. A finished edge grabs evenly everywhere. Any section that slides smoothly is a section that still needs work.
The hanging-hair test is the finer of the two checks. Hold a single hair by one end and bring the edge to it a centimetre or so below your fingers, again with no pressure. An edge finished through 8,000 grit or higher will part the hair cleanly on contact. An edge that only pushes the hair aside is honed but not fully polished. It will still shave, just roughly, and it is worth another pass or two on the finishing stone.
Restoring a Vintage or Rusty Blade to a Shaveable Edge
A rusty vintage blade can usually come back to a shaveable edge. The process takes longer than a routine honing, but it is the same craft with a repair stage added before the normal grit progression begins.
- Clean off surface rust first. Soak the blade in diluted white vinegar for ten to twenty minutes. Follow with gentle scrubbing using a mild abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth. This lifts most surface staining without removing sound steel.
- Check for a warped spine. Lay the razor flat on a stone and rock it gently. A spine that rocks instead of sitting flat will hone unevenly no matter how careful the stroke is, and that needs correcting, sometimes with a spine-taping trick, before honing continues.
- Assess how deep the pitting goes. Pitting on the flat of the blade is cosmetic. Pitting that reaches the edge itself has to be ground out entirely. That means starting on a 220 to 400 grit stone and removing enough steel to reshape a clean bevel past the damage.
- Run the full grit progression from 1,000 upward. Once the blade is flat, clean, and free of pitting at the edge, restoration and routine honing are the same job from this point on.
Deep pitting near the very edge is the point where restoration stops being worth it for most people. Grinding past it can eat away enough of the blade’s width to change its geometry. A razor ground down to a fraction of its original size shaves differently than it did new. A blade with rust confined to the spine, the tang, or the flat of the scales is almost always worth the work. One pitted a millimetre deep along the cutting edge is a judgment call. Should You Oil a Straight Razor?
Carbon steel needs a film of oil between shaves, and stainless steel does not strictly need it but is never hurt by it. A trace of camellia or mineral oil wiped along the blade after it is dry keeps the surface from picking up moisture out of the air. That moisture starts rust on carbon steel in the first place. The habit takes about ten seconds, and it cheaply protects the steel you just spent hours honing.
One timing detail matters: never oil a blade right before honing it. Oil sitting on the edge keeps the stone from biting into the steel evenly, and it will make an already difficult 1,000-grit stage even harder to judge. Wipe the blade clean and dry before it touches a stone, and oil it again only after honing and stropping are both finished.
When to Pay for a Honing Service Instead
Freehand honing is not for everyone, and paying for it is the right call for most people who shave with a straight razor rather than collect them. Say you own one razor, shave with it a few times a week, and have no interest in the mechanics of stonework. A honing service then costs less than a full stone set, and it removes the risk of ruining the one edge you actually rely on. The same goes for a genuinely valuable antique. Practicing bevel-setting on a blade you cannot replace is a poor place to build the skill.
Honing your own razors starts making sense once you own two or more, since the stones then pay for themselves faster across multiple blades. It also makes sense once the process itself is something you want to get good at, rather than a chore standing between you and a shave. A restoration project on a rough vintage find is a reasonable place to start too, precisely because the blade is already imperfect and there is less to lose while you learn.
What Would Change Our Answer
The case for learning to hone gets stronger the more razors pass through your hands. A single razor, honed twice a year, rarely justifies the stone cost or the time spent practicing on scrap steel first. A collection of three or more, or a habit of picking up rough estate-sale blades to restore, changes that math quickly. Each stone purchase then amortizes across many bevels instead of one. Distance from a honing service matters too.
