A straight razor is one moving part and four variables: the steel it is made from, the grind of the blade, its width, and the shape of its point. Those four decide how it feels in the hand. None of them decide whether your first shave goes well. That is decided by whether the edge arrives genuinely sharp, which is a question about the seller rather than the razor.
Buy a razor that someone will state, in writing, has been honed shave-ready. Everything below matters after that.
Steel: carbon cuts keener, stainless forgives more
Carbon steel takes a finer edge for less work on the stones. It is a simpler alloy, so the edge can be brought to a thinner, more uniform apex before it starts to crumble, and it transmits sound and vibration clearly enough that you can hear a bad angle. Almost every traditional Solingen and Sheffield razor is carbon steel for that reason.
The cost is corrosion. Carbon steel will show orange spots within days if you put it away damp, and rust pitting at the edge ruins a razor permanently. The maintenance is small but genuinely non-negotiable: rinse, dry on a towel, leave it open for a few minutes, then wipe the blade with a trace of camellia or mineral oil before it goes back in the scales.
Stainless razors tolerate the bathroom. They hold their edge a little longer between honings and shrug off the damp entirely. In exchange they take noticeably more time on the stones to reach the same keenness, and they give duller feedback, which is a real disadvantage while you are still learning what a correct angle feels like.
For a first razor, carbon steel from a maker with a reputation to protect is the stronger choice. If you know you will leave it wet on the sink, buy stainless and stop worrying about it.
Grind: how much metal was removed from the blade face
Grind describes how deeply the sides of the blade are hollowed out between the spine and the edge. It sets the blade’s stiffness, and stiffness sets the feel.

A full hollow is the standard modern grind and the right default. The flex means the blade follows the contours of your face slightly instead of skipping across them, and the audible feedback tells you when the angle has gone wrong before your skin does. Its weakness is that a thin blade is easy to damage on the hone and easy to overflex against the jaw.
Wedges are the opposite trade. All that mass drives through coarse hair without deflecting, which is why they were the standard for a century, but they need considerably more skill to hone and they tell you nothing while you shave.
Width: 5/8 inch is the default for a reason
Width is measured in eighths of an inch from spine to edge. A 5/8 is about 16 millimetres, a 6/8 about 19, a 7/8 about 22.
Narrow blades are easier to steer. Under the nose, along the jawline and around the corner of the mouth you are placing an edge in a small space at a controlled angle, and every extra millimetre of blade makes that placement harder. Wider blades hold more lather, need fewer rinses, and track more stably across the flat of the cheek.
Almost nobody regrets starting at 5/8 or 6/8. People who start at 8/8 because it looked impressive tend to buy a narrower razor within a month.
Point shape decides how much it forgives
The point is the leading corner of the blade, and it is the part that cuts you.
- Round point. The corner is radiused away entirely. It cannot dig in if you drop the heel or roll the blade, which makes it the safest shape while your hand is still learning. The trade is that it is clumsy at detail work: you cannot get a crisp line under the nose or square off a sideburn cleanly.
- Square point. A sharp ninety-degree corner. It does the detail work precisely, and it will open your skin the first time you tilt the blade wrong.
- French or barber’s notch. A decorative crescent near the point, essentially a round point with a finger notch. Behaves like a round point.
- Spike point. Extended sharp corner for maximum precision. Not a first razor.
Start round or French. Detail work around the moustache and sideburns can be finished with a safety razor or trimmer for the first few months, and that is a much better outcome than a scar.
Shavettes are a different tool, not a cheap straight razor
A shavette holds a disposable blade, usually half of a snapped double-edge blade, in a straight-razor-shaped handle. It is often sold as the sensible way to learn before committing to steel. That framing is wrong in one specific way worth understanding.
A honed straight razor edge is supported by the wedge of metal behind it, so it flexes as a unit and pushes through hair with a slight give. A shavette blade is a thin rectangle clamped at one edge, so it is far more rigid at the cutting edge and considerably sharper in the aggressive sense. It removes hair with less tolerance for angle error and it bites at the first wrong move.
What a shavette does teach is real: blade angle, skin stretching, and the discipline of no pressure. What it skips is the entire maintenance half of the craft, which is stropping, honing and edge assessment. Learn on one if you want, but expect the transition to steel to feel like an improvement rather than a step up in difficulty.
How to tell the edge is actually sharp before you shave with it
Two checks take thirty seconds and save a bad first shave.
The thumbnail test. Rest the edge on your thumbnail at a shallow angle with no downward pressure and draw it a few millimetres sideways. A shave-ready edge grabs the nail evenly along its whole length and will not slide. Any section that skates smoothly is a section that is not sharp, and a razor sharp at the middle but dull at the heel will pull every time you reach the jaw.
The hanging hair test. Hold a single hair by one end and bring the edge to it a centimetre or two below your fingers, again without pressure. A finished edge parts the hair on contact. An edge that pushes the hair aside is honed but not polished, and it will shave, roughly.
Neither test damages the razor and both are more reliable than looking at it. A dull edge looks identical to a keen one at arm’s length, which is exactly why so many first razors get blamed for a bad shave they were never capable of giving.
What is not worth buying
Mystery-steel razors from gift sets. A straight razor sold as part of a boxed shaving set with a brush and a bowl is decoration. The steel is soft, it will not hold an edge, and honing it costs more than the set did.
Unrestored antiques as a first razor. A Sheffield blade from 1890 can be superb after restoration, and restoration means grinding out pitting, correcting a warped spine and setting a bevel from scratch. That is an intermediate honing project, not a starting point.
A razor with no seller-stated honing. This is the same point as the opening one because it is the point that matters most. A razor with a factory edge feels blunt, drags at the hair instead of cutting it, and teaches you that straight shaving hurts. It does not hurt. Blunt shaving hurts.

A straight razor does not shave closer than a well-used safety razor. Both are single blades cutting hair at the skin surface, so both avoid the retraction that causes ingrown hairs. What a straight razor gives you is control over the exact angle and a consumable cost of nothing. What it takes is months of practice and a maintenance habit. Buy a 5/8 or 6/8 full hollow carbon steel razor with a round point, from a seller who states it has been honed shave-ready and by whom. That is the whole recommendation. Makers worth looking at without any of the usual caveats: DOVO and Böker in Solingen, and Thiers Issard in France. All three still grind razors as a production line rather than a novelty, which is the only thing that reliably separates a razor from an ornament.
