Choosing an electric shaver for a bald head goes wrong in a predictable way: people compare the numbers printed on the box, and almost none of those numbers describe how a shaver behaves on a skull. Cutting height is fixed by the thickness of the perforated head, so no motor, no blade count and no cutting-speed figure will make an electric shave closer. What varies between models is how well the cutters stay in contact with a curved surface, how the tool feels in a hand working blind, and whether you can keep it running in three years.

The foil column is the one that surprises people, because a foil shaver is generally the closer tool on a face. A flat screen is excellent on a cheek and poor on a curve. On a skull only its centre makes contact, so you cover a narrow strip per pass and spend most of the shave hunting for the angle that keeps it down.
The four things worth checking
1. Independent pivots
Hold the shaver and press each head individually. If each one moves on its own, the cluster can reshape itself to the curve of your skull as the stroke travels. If the whole cluster tilts as a block, it behaves like a wide rigid head on a dome, which is the exact problem the category exists to solve.
This is the single most useful thing you can test in thirty seconds, and it is almost never on the specification sheet.
2. Grip and reach
You will hold this above your head, behind your head, and twisted in behind an ear, for several minutes at a time. A body that fills a palm is easier to control than one you have to pinch, and a lighter tool encourages a lighter touch. Pressure on a scalp is worth avoiding because there is almost no fat between skin and bone, so the skin cannot flex away.

3. Battery behaviour under load
Runtime figures are measured under light or no load. A head shaver driving four or five cutters through dense scalp hair draws considerably more, so plan for roughly half the headline number and be pleased if you get more.
Two things matter more than the total. A quick-charge mode that gives you one shave from a few minutes on the cable is genuinely useful on a morning you forgot. And a cordless-only design with a degraded battery runs the cutters slower, which makes them tug, and very few models let you replace the cell. 4. Replacement head supply

Wet, dry, and how close you get
Rotary cutters shave slightly closer dry. Dry hair stands away from the scalp and feeds into the perforations, while wet hair lies flat against the skin and slides past. If your scalp is calm, dry is faster and better.
Wet use with a light gel is for a scalp that stings, feels tight, or has caught the sun. The gel adds glide and takes the edge off the drag, and costs you a small amount of closeness.
The practical reason people shave in the shower is unrelated to either: a full head sheds a lot of clippings, and a shower disposes of them. If that is your plan, confirm the model is rated for full immersion and rinsing with the motor running, which is a different claim from being splash resistant.
Match the shaver to your hair, not to a review
Two heads with the same specification behave differently under different hair, and the variables are density, coarseness and curl.
Coarse, dense hair. Motor torque earns its keep here. A shaver that bogs down turns one pass into three, and three passes over the same skin removes most of the irritation advantage that brought you to an electric. Look for a model marketed at thick beards rather than at travel or convenience.
Tightly curled hair. Curl is the hardest case for any rotary head, because a curled hair can lie flat against the scalp instead of standing up into the perforations. Fewer, larger heads with wider slots handle it better than many fine ones. Shave dry, and go over each area in two directions rather than pressing harder.
Fine or thinning hair with bare patches. This is the easiest case and the one where a modest shaver is enough. The risk is the opposite one: a powerful shaver on thin skin over bone invites pressure. Let the tool sit at its own weight.
A crown whorl with a strong spiral. Everyone has one and some are pronounced. Where hair changes direction sharply within a couple of centimetres, head count matters less than pivot travel, because the heads need to sit at genuinely different angles at the same moment.
Noise is worse than the numbers suggest
A head shaver is louder in use than a face shaver of the same family, for two reasons that have nothing to do with the motor. It runs more cutters at once, and you hold it against your skull, which conducts the sound directly to your ears through bone rather than through air.
No manufacturer publishes a figure that captures this, and comparing quoted decibel numbers across brands is not useful. If noise matters to you, hear one running before you buy. It is also a reason some people shave in the evening rather than at six in the morning in a shared flat.
Test it properly inside the return window
A shaver that feels good in the hand can be wrong for your head, and a fortnight tells you. Four checks are worth doing deliberately.
- Shave the back and then feel every square centimetre of it. Missed patches at the nape and behind the ears are the failure mode of a poorly pivoting cluster, and you will not see them.
- Time a full head on day one and day ten. If it is not getting faster, the tool is fighting your hair rather than your technique.

Remington sells a head-shaver variant of its rotary platform, and Philips does not make a palm-shaped head shaver but its rotary face shavers are the ones most often pressed into scalp duty.
Naming a line is not a recommendation of a specific model. Within any of these ranges the difference between the entry and top models is usually battery, wet rating and cleaning accessories rather than how close it cuts.
What does not matter
Cutting speed figures. More cuts per minute means the shaver copes with density without bogging down. It does not lower the cutting height.
Head count above four. Coverage per stroke improves marginally; pivot quality matters far more.
LED displays. A battery percentage is mildly useful. A head-replacement reminder is a calendar, not a sensor.
Travel locks and pouches. Real features, unrelated to the shave.
Cleaning stations, as a deciding factor. A station handles the daily rinse and does not reach the compacted hair under each cutter, which still needs lifting off and brushing weekly. It is a convenience worth having and never a reason to choose one model over a better-pivoting one.
Waterproof ratings quoted on their own. Splash resistant and safe to rinse with the motor running are different claims, and only the second keeps the cutters clean.
